"I feel proud to have been in on the first years of the development of the Knight Center. Jim Detjen opened my eyes to new methods for teaching environmental journalism, and I've been on a roll ever since." |
I am currently associate professor in communication studies at Sonoma State University in California. I have taught media courses for more than 15 years in news writing, video production, environmental communications, media criticism, media ethics, scriptwriting, international film and international communication. I recently completed a Fulbright where I taught at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communications, University of the West Indies, and conducted research on health, science and environmental reporting in Jamaica. I began my media career in 1985 producing documentaries in the United States and abroad, including in Nepal, India and Israel. I worked on videos about social issues, such as homelessness, international development and the environment. I received my Ph.D. from Michigan State University and worked as a teaching assistant for Jim Detjen in MSU’s Environmental Journalism program. My dissertation examined how the news media covered the Narmada Dam controversy in India. I have published articles examining the media in a number of journals including Media, Culture and Society, Mass Comm. Review, Journal of International Communication, Journal of Film and Video, Communications and the Law and the International Journal of Environmental Studies. I serve as a faculty evaluator for SSU's annual publication of Project Censored: The Year's Top 25 Censored Stories That Did Not Make the News. |
