"The faculty and staff of the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism make it one of the best programs in the country for a hands-on, experiential journalism and writing education." |
As one of the first graduate students in the Environmental Journalism program, I had a front-row seat watching the program grow. I worked closely with Jim Detjen to create and edit the EJ News (now a fabulous magazine!) and create the program’s first Web presence. As a graduate student, I worked with the MSU Institute for Water Research, interned with the Department of Environmental Quality Pollution Prevention Section and wrote for the Great Lakes Reporter. After graduating with a master’s in journalism in 1998, I moved to Prescott, Ariz., to work for Prescott College, a four-year, non-profit liberal arts college specializing in environmental and adventure education. During my five years at PC I won several awards for the college’s alumni magazine, revamped the college’s Web site and had articles published in Sunset magazine, The Last Straw, Green Print and River Management News. I am now a communications manager for Yavapai College in Prescott, a community college serving more than 15,000 students over an 8,000 square mile county. While I still do a lot of writing and work with the media, I am the lead writer and editor of the college’s Web site, working with different departments on their Web architecture and incorporating new media such as streaming videos, podcasts and blogs. In my spare time I freelance and serve on the board of the Prescott Farmers Market, a growers-only market from May to October and an organization that supports and educates the community about the benefits of local agriculture. |
